We recommend gentle skin care for all patients.

In general, the face should be washed twice daily with a gentle cleanser such as Vanicream Gentle Cleanser or Dove Sensitive Skin bar soap. Serums, if recommended by the dermatologist, should be applied next and allowed to dry. Moisturizing sunscreens (non-comedogenic, SPF 30 or greater) should be applied as the last step in the morning. Tinted sunscreens make a good substitute for makeup and are recommended for patients with melasma as they also block visible light (in addition to UV protection provided by traditional sunscreens).

In the evening, the face should be washed again with a gentle cleanser. Many patients use their retinoid or retinol products at bedtime because these products are oftentimes deactivated by sunlight. Retinoids may be drying so a non-comedogenic moisturizer is often recommended to be applied first. Retinoids are not safe in pregnant or breastfeeding women.
