5-Fluorouracil cream is often prescribed by dermatologists to treat areas of the body with more than 10 to 15 pre-cancers (aka actinic keratoses). It is an excellent treatment option which reduces skin cancer risk in treated areas of the body.
Very sadly, pet deaths from accidental fluorouracil ingestion are on the rise. If eaten, less than 1 teaspoon of this cream can cause the death of a beloved pet. Thus, it is of paramount importance to keep this medication locked away from pets and children at all times. No children have been harmed by the cream, but the pet toxocosis study referenced below serves as an important reminder that fluorouracil must always be kept in a secure location.
