Rosacea
Rosacea is a chronic, inflammatory skin disorder primarily beginning between ages 30 and 60. This common condition is characterized by tender facial redness and typically waxes and wanes throughout a person's life.
Signs & Symptoms
Patients with rosacea present with a variety of symptoms such as burning, flushing, and persistent redness of the central face (nose and cheeks most commonly). Some patients develop bumps and pustules while others notice a bumpy texture on their nose. Ocular rosacea presents with the sensation of gritty, red eyes.
Treatment
Rosacea triggers (such as ultraviolet light, changes in temperature, physical activity, spicy foods, alcohol, stress, and smoking) can sometimes be minimized by the most motivated patients. Excellent skin care (gentle cleanser, moisturizing sunscreen) improves the symptoms of rosacea by about 10-20%. The dermatologist can prescribe topical medications, oral antibiotics, and laser therapy for patients who do not respond to lifestyle and skin care changes.
